Detroit’s Masonic Temple (The Masonic), is the largest building of its kind in the world. Construction began in 1920. The cornerstone of the temple was placed on September 19, 1922, using the same trowel that George Washington had used to set the cornerstone of the United States Capital in Washington D.C. The building was dedicated on Thanksgiving Day, 1926. The building is 550,000 sq. ft., has 1,037 rooms, 3 theaters, including the Masonic Theater, a 4,400 seat auditorium. There are 16 above ground floors with seven lodge rooms, 5 pipe organs, a 17,500 sq. ft. drill hall, two ballrooms, kitchen, several dining rooms, a barber shop, 16 bowling lanes, parlors, lounge rooms and an unfinished swimming pool. The Masonic Temple was named to the National Historic Registry in 1980. It’s a beautiful maze of spaces, entirely adorned with emblems, symbols, and art that reflect the ideologies and beliefs of the Freemasons.
